About Us
Our Vision
Hunger is ground zero — a fundamental barrier that prevents individuals from fully participating in and contributing to society. It's more than just an empty stomach; it's a barrier to education, health, and opportunity. The vision of the Idaho Hunger Relief Task Force is not just about addressing hunger as a basic need, but recognizing it as a pivotal issue that affects every aspect of individual and community well-being.
Our vision extends beyond providing immediate relief. It encompasses a future where every Idahoan has consistent access to nutritious food, empowering them to thrive and contribute fully to their communities. It's about building resilience and sustainability, ensuring that no individual or family experiences the effects of hunger. By addressing hunger comprehensively, we create a foundation for a healthier, more equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
This expanded vision underscores the Idaho Hunger Relief Task Force's commitment not only to alleviating hunger but also to advocating for systemic change that ensures food security for all, laying the groundwork for a brighter and more inclusive future.
Our Mission
The Task Force works in six broad policy and program areas to address hunger and food security in Idaho:
Evaluate hunger needs of Idahoans
Raise public awareness of hunger and its root causes through education
Make recommendations to public and private food security programs and/or services
Provide food security related information to the Idaho Legislature
Actively support the development of programs and policies to eliminate hunger
Encourage collaboration among programs that work to eliminate hunger and its root causes
Through our areas of focus we have been able to create and sustain a wide network of community partners and organizations all working towards eliminating hunger in Idaho.
Our History
The Idaho Hunger Relief Task Force has a rich history rooted in addressing the pressing issue of hunger within the state of Idaho. Hunger in Idaho has long been a significant challenge, affecting individuals and families across urban centers and rural communities alike.
In October of 2006, the first-ever statewide Summit on Hunger and Food Insecurity was held. More than 250 people traveled to Boise to talk about hunger in Idaho and craft the next steps. Recognizing the critical need for coordinated action, the Idaho Hunger Relief Task Force was established to unify efforts across public and private sectors. Formed as a statewide initiative, the Task Force brings together leaders and representatives from diverse backgrounds and sectors, including government agencies, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and community leaders. This collaborative approach aims to leverage resources, expertise, and advocacy to develop and support programs and policies that effectively alleviate hunger in Idaho.
Kathy Gardner, the founder of the Idaho Hunger Relief Task Force, played a pivotal role in its establishment and development. Serving as Executive Director for 17 years, Kathy's leadership was instrumental in shaping the organization's mission and strategy. Under her guidance, the Task Force expanded its reach and impact, forging partnerships and implementing initiatives that addressed hunger comprehensively.
In 2021, Denise Dixon assumed the role of Executive Director, bringing with her a steadfast commitment to eliminating hunger in Idaho. Denise's leadership has been marked by tireless advocacy and innovative approaches to food insecurity. Her dedication and achievements were honored in 2024 when the Congressional Hunger Center recognized her and the organization with the Community Champion Hunger Leadership Award at the Hunger Leadership Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. This prestigious accolade underscored Denise's impactful contributions to hunger relief efforts in Idaho and beyond.
Looking ahead, the Idaho Hunger Relief Task Force continues to evolve, guided by a commitment to sustainability, equity, and community empowerment. Future initiatives will focus on expanding access to nutritious food, advocating for supportive policies, and fostering resilience within communities. By building on its history of collaboration and leadership, the Task Force remains steadfast in its mission to create a future where hunger does not exist and all Idahoans can thrive.
